Waiuta 1906-1951 The Gold Mine The Town The People
Waiuta 1906-1951 The Gold Mine The Town The People

The discovery of the Birthday Reef near Greek Creek in November 1905 marked the beginning of a flourishing 45 year chapter in West Coast history.  Waiuta developed as an industrial town clustered around an ever deepening mineshaft and went on to become New Zealand's second biggest goldmine.

The story of Waiuta is especially significant in the industrial relations history of New Zealand.  Waiuta miners played an important role in the 1912 Waihi strike/Reefton lockout. They were also among the first New Zealand workers to fight successfully for improved occupational health standards in their battle against the lung disease miners' phthisis.

While no town's history can be encompassed in the one telling, this book brings back memories for many people.
